In the shadow of the wings; If Shengal starts to talk…

“People of Shengal” project, which implemented by Zan Foundation with the support of DVV International, is aimed to draw attention to problems and drama of the Yazidi refugees who fled from the Şengal area of Iraq to Turkey in August 3rd, 2014.

Interviews made within the scope of this project which is aiming to bring the problems of the Yazidi refugees to the agenda of non-governmental organizations, to give information about Yazidis and their beliefs, and to contribute to change the perception on Yazidis were brought together by Namık Kemal Dinc in the book “In the shadow of the wings: If Shengal starts to talk”

In this book published by Zan Foundation Publications in October 2017, Namık Kemal Dinç follows the traces of the genocial massacre in Shengal. In this book, he is recording the traces of the massacres, migration, pain, and fear that the Yazidis experienced.

“According to a legend, those who sniffed the lotus flower were exiled from their country. But in our story, there is the smell of war, weapons, and gunpowder instead of the lotus flower. In our story there is hope for a life that cannot cross the seas to live. In our story, migration is just a statistical figure on paper with the cold numbers, and the image of the overturned boats seen on the screens. In our story,  immigration is an exhausted life compressed into camps and naked feet in the streets.

In this book, Yazidis are handled with 6 different points of view through 6 testimonies. The geography, belief systems, migration routes, places where they live, and their dreams about the future are tried to be conveyed from their own narratives.”
